CL01 - Building Applications with VisualAge C++ Visual Builder

Duration: 1 Day

Instructor: D. G. Clark

Prerequisites: Programming experience, preferably in C and C++. However C++ experience is not required.

Course Description: This class introduces programmers to C++ and the Visual Age IDE for version 4. The student builds a working application using the Visual Builder. In the process the student learns which controls are available, how those controls relate to the IBM Open Class User Interface Library, types of connections between parts and when to use each connection type. The students also learns how to build their own non-visual parts and use them in the application. Differences between version 3 and version 4 of the Visual Builder are pointed out.

Requirements: The student must come with a laptop that has Visual Age C++ version 4 installed. Students registered for the class that need a copy of the version 4 compiler can contact the instructor. It is possible to attend the class and use version 3, but we recommend version 4 for the class.

Students also need to purchase the book VisualAge for C++ Visual Programmer's Handbook by Dale R Nilsson and Peter M. Jakab. The book is available from IBM here .
The price is $50.

Note that this book is for VAC v 3. Students will be using the book for the class, with differences between v. 3 and v. 4 pointed out in the class.

It is also highly recommended, but not required, that students purchase Power GUI Programming with VisualAge for C++ by Tsuji, Love, Law and Olson. ISBN 0-471-16482-8.
The book is available here .
The price is $54.95

If the student is new to C++ programming the book C++ Primer - Third Edition by Stanley B Lippman and Josee LaJoie, Addison-Wesley - ISBN 0-201-82470-1 (about $45.00) is an excellent, excellent book on C++ programming. One of the authors is/was in the IBM Compiler group
