CLASSES AND PRESENTATIONS
Warpstock 2004 is shaping up to be one of the most informative and valuable events
ever for OS/2-eCS users and developers. Classes and presentations recently added
to the schedule include:
Presentation:
Solveig Haugland, a long-time member of the StarOffice and OpenOffice.org
communities, will give a major presentation on key features in the OpenOffice.org
suite of office applications. Solveig is currently a technical trainer with
getopenoffice.org. She is also co-author of the "OpenOffice.org 1.1 Resource Kit,"
a comprehensive tutorial covering all components in the application suite.
Demo:
Developer Jan van Wijk will focus on demonstrating the many functions of his
versatile DFSee utility for OS/2 or eCS. Items covered will include partitioning,
imaging and cloning. Data-recovery will be addressed, if time permits.
Participants will also be able to ask Jan questions about DFSee.
Class:
Mozilla-based Content Management for your Website
Arne Blankerts will present a half-day class on how you can use PHP and XML to
update your website, vastly reducing the time that would be needed using HTML.
Arne will also show attendees how using Mozilla's XUL-technology can make things
even better. In this class, you'll learn how to handle XML with PHP4/PHP5 in a
simple, easy way. Additionally the course will cover the development of a
XUL-based Interface for your private Content Management System (CMS) using
Mozilla and some Javascript.
Demo:
Exploring Mozilla
Arne Blankerts will take attendees on an exploration into the many extensions and
options provided within Mozilla, just waiting to be used and tested. This
presentation will show you how to get the best out of the beast, what extensions
are available and how one can install them. For the experienced crowd, a short
visit to the power off XUL, the Mozilla GUI language, will show how even you can
create your own extensions, and thus add the feature you've always been waiting
for.
Presentation:
Arne Blankerts will also lead a general discussion about the work done by
netlabs.org, an important center developing Open Source software for OS/2 and
eComStation.
Class:
Using Mesa2 to create a Salebook and Cashbook for a travel agency
Edgar Scrutton is a retired teacher who now handles IT and bookkeeping-accounting
for his wife's travel agency in Windsor, Ontario. The Salebook and Cashbook he
originally developed in DOS have gradually evolved over eighteen years as the travel
agency business grew.
This session will show an integrated collection of spreadsheets that are
structured to meet the requirement of Canadian and Ontario legal and tax
reporting requirements. Supporting dual Canadian and American currencies, these
sheets rely heavily on Mesa2 scripts to ease the process of maintaining accounts
and commissions receivable. Session attendees will be taught the use of primary
and secondary data entry; script creation and execution; and how to create
formulas across multiple sheets to track expense accounts monthly and yearly.
A CD-ROM will be distributed with notes, sample MESA2.M2 files and a demo version
of MESA2.
Class:
C/REXX partnership: calling Rexx from C and calling C from Rexx
Paul Curtis will lead a half-day class on the details of interfacing to Rexx and C.
Some of those details include: making your own DLL available to be called by any
rexx script, getting read/write access to variables on both the C side and REXX
side including stem variables from the memory pool, getting access to the command
line exactly how it was entered, instead of how C startup parses it with argc and
argv, which is often undesirable. Also, some trade offs with C versus Classic REXX
and ObjectREXX will be noted, as well as tools to build/compile.
Demo:
Paul Curtis will demonstrate his CSSDir utility, which replaces and upgrades the
DIR command included with OS/2 and eCS. Using CSSDir Paul will show you how to:
- Sort by EA size, size, name, etc over multiple directories, and/or drives
which could include millions of files, easily and quickly with CSSDir.
- Limit files found by dates, include files that are of a given size, exclude
files and directories.
- Change the layout of file details for views you want instead of the standard
dir limits.
- Limit sub directories searches to a given depth, not all or nothing as regular
dir does.
- Find duplicate files on your system.
- Produce multiple reports sorted differently in one pass and invocation.
- How to snap-shot your system to detect systems changes with CSSDIR. (time
permitting)
