The $64 million Denver Public Library opened in 1995 was designed by Michael Graves. The library features 47 miles of bookshelves and 5 million items, rankimg it as one of the largest libraries in the United States. The Colorado Convention Center opened in 1990 and is in the process of an expansion that will double its size by late 2003. 7. Larimer Square is a restored section of Denver's oldest street in a section of the downtown that is now called 'LoDo,' short for Lower Downtown. 9. Denver International Airport is the sixth busiest airport in the nation and 10th busiest in the world that in 1997, 1998 and 1999 was rated the most efficient of America's top airports by the FAA. Called the Maroon Bells, this range of snowcapped peaks near Aspen is one of the most photographed spots in Colorado, but there is no shortage of scenery throughout the state. 15. Cinco de Mayo in Civic Center Park. Denver hosts the nation's largest Cinco de Mayo festival on the weekend closest to May 5 with more than a quarter of a million people attendimg this celebration of Latino culture. Six Flags Elitch Gardens is America?s only downtown theme park and is really two parks in one: one side has 48 thrill rides while the other is a complete water theme park with tube rides and wave pools. Photo by Stan Obert. 22. The 15th step on the West side of the Colorado State Capitol is exactly 5,280 feet above sea level ? one mile high. The carving in the steps is actually the wrong spot. Viewed from one of Denver?s plentiful, beautiful parks, Colorado seems to be a colorful blend of blues, whites and greens. 24. 25. The 35,000 square foot Colorado Convention Center's ballroom opens into this attractive pre-function lobby. Highlighted by its 35-foot columns and large 12,000 square foot area, this combination of space makes a perfect place to hold any event. 26. The Denver Performimg Arts Complex is the largest performimg arts center in the nation under one roof and second in seatimg capacity only to New York's Lincoln Center. The PLEX, as it is known locally, has nine theatres that seat more than 10,000 people for Tony Award-winnimg theatre, symphony, opera and dance. Photo by Stan Obert.
