GEN-03 : WarpDoctor - the Site

Topic Description

  • WarpDoctor is the rebirth of the old Warp Pharmacy - and more. It is intended to be the site where you can get information about what hardware works with OS/2 along with instructions for how to get that hardware to work. In addition WarpDoctor is planned to be a repository for OS/2 documentation, help and instructions for getting software applications to work with OS/2 (such as Acrobat v 3), and a mirror and respository for OS/2 software and drivers. The site contents come from the OS/2 community, and the WarpDoctor site is designed so that the site users can add new content or change existing content.

The WarpDoctor site is built using a number of software building blocks: CGI programs, the Rexx plug-in, the database interface, and DrDialog/DrRexx applications that run in the browser. Those building blocks are made freely available in hopes that they will be useful for OS/2 hosted sites.

The first half of the presentation is a discussion of the WarpDoctor site: its purpose, how it is organized and how to use it. The second half of the presentation discusses how the site is built, i.e. the software building blocks: how they work and where to get them.

GEN-04 : eComStation Maintenance

Topic Description

  • eComStation maintenance is either a piece of cake or living hell. If you would rather eat cake, drop in for an update on the eComStation Maintenance Tool. We will also be discussing maintenance issues in general as well as answering any questions you might have concerning the maintenance of OS/2 systems.

Speaker Info

  • Chuck McKinnis retired from IBM in 1992 after 26 years as a systems engineer in large systems and communications. He is the author of the eCS Maintenance Tool, NICPAK, and a contirbutor to RexxAutoStart. He has been an OS/2 user since 1990 and has experience with Rexx that goes back to the beginning of Rexx.

GEN-05 : Installing OS/2: An approach to dealing with difficult hardware

Topic Description

  • Want OS/2 but want it on the "unsupported" hardware you have? Come to this session where we will try to unveil some of the secrets of OS/2 installation and provide a methodical approach to installing OS/2 that can conquer much of even the most unruly hardware.

Schedule

  • Saturday, October 18, 2003

Speaker Info

  • Jose Rodriguez is a free lance technical writer (or a tech contractor at times offering system administration services in heterogeneous environments). He is currently working for a Silicon Valley company. Additionally, although not a kid anymore, he is currently pursuing a PhD in mathematics (and has dabbled in philosophy and computer science on a regular basis) at San Jose State University. He became acquainted with OS/2 around 1995 after he became aware of the limitations of Windows. Since then, he has installed versions 2.11 up to Aurora (4.5) in laptops as well as workstations (both single and dual processors).

GEN-06 : Installing OS/2: Multi-boot scenarios

Topic Description

  • In this session we will consider the most common troublesome scenarios, such as installing OS/2 after an initial space allocation of 8Gigs (or greater) in which WinX usually resides. Although this problem usually is applicable to Merlin and previous versions of OS/2 with no built in LVM support, eComStation 1.0 appears to have a behavioral affinity for doing the same, according to our group members. I will also treat the manner to alter the WinX initiation file to recognize (and obey) OS/2's boot manager in a multiboot configuration possibly with Linux also.

GEN-07 : Installing OS/2: Open Help session, bring your problems in

Topic Description

  • Having trouble installing OS/2? Have OS/2 partially installed but still trying to tweak it and get ALL the hardware working? Will bring it on in to this informal fix-fest and let's see if we and anyone else on-site can get it working.

  • Alex Taylor is an OS/2 user and occasional programmer. He started back in university after being given a second-hand copy of Warp 3; this later led to a job working in OS/2 server and LAN support at the office of a large Canadian insurance company. Alex is currently a member of the eComStation Development Group, a loose-knit group of volunteers who contribute to various aspects of eCS development. His projects include Icon Themes, the Archive Viewer, and the Installation Volume Manager.

GEN-10 : New Virtual Machine Options

Topic Description

  • For the past year, Serenity Systems has been involved in expanding the support for host and guest operating systems in the NetSys GmbH product, twoOStwo. This topic will discuss plans for delivering this support and what this will mean to OS/2 users, as well as how the technology will be integrated into the eComStation product family.

The presentation will cover the unique host and guest support combinations being made available, including support for OS/2 - eComStation as a guest running on Linux and FreeBSD systems. There will be a detailed demonstration of Linux host support running eComStation, and the session will include information on participating in the public beta programs and the planned OS/2 host feature.
